Glossary Data center infrastructure management (DCIM)

Data center infrastructure management (DCIM) was born from the convergence of IT and the management of building facilities functions to match computing needs of businesses. The main objective of DCIM is to provide a holistic view of a data center’s performance up to the utilization of energy, equipment and floor space, to constantly evolve and enhance performance.

DCIM software tools locate and map relationships between a building and its IT systems to monitor, measure, and manage variables such as energy consumption of on-premise equipment (servers, storage and network switches) and facility infrastructure components (such as power distribution units [PDUs] and computer room air conditioners [CRACs]).
